Learning about learning
Read your IBSA guide for TAADEL403A to page 27
Visit the BBC website for adult learning. Click on Returning to Learning and explore informaton about learning and learners.
Read the NCVER publication 'Facilitating Learning through effective teaching', consider and answer these questions:
- How does this NCVER paper define learning? Compare it to definitions in the other resources you have. Use the net to find other definitions. How and why do they differ?
- Read the characteristics of facilitative teaching in Box 1. Give an example, real or imagined, of how each characteristic could be displayed in teaching your subject. Can you think of any other characterisitcs of facilitative teaching? Do you agree with these characteristics?
- Do some research on Situated Learning. Describe the theory. How does it fit with your view of how you will train and assess in your field? Give 5 examples of ways in which you'll use Situated Learning.

Read 'Getting to Grips with Learning Styles'. Answer these questions:
- What are learning styles?
- Do some reading on the 4 stage / Kolb / 4mat theory, and on the neurolingustic programming VAK theory.
- Find a free learning styles inventory on the net, and complete it. What's the theory behind it? What kind of learner does it say you are?
- Report on these three theories. How will knowing about them help you to help people learn?
- Give a few examples of practical ways you can enhance learning for a range of learners.
